Class description:

We are so excited to have Sarah Anderson visit our studio for a half-day scraffito workshop. While this class is open to anyone, we think you'll get the most out of this if you've had a little clay experience.

In this class, we will deep dive into scraffito as a surface decoration technique led by Sarah Anderson, a potter known for her instantly recognizable scraffitoed forms.

Materials Provided:

  • pocelain clay tiles
  • carving tools
  • underglaze
  • snacks

*you are welcome to bring an additional leatherhard piece you've created to practice on. Leatherhard mug forms can also be purchased in advance for $10 each (we need a 3-day heads up).

Schedule for the Day:

12 - 1 p.m. - Intro & Clay Prep

Intro to design principles, tips on prepping clay for scraffito, interactive practice painting backgrounds.

1 - 2 p.m. - Lesson: Surface decoration techniques

Learn how Sarah designs characters and participate in an interactive demo. We'll discuss elements like texture, shapes, underglaze vs. slip and how to use negative vs. positive space in your design.

2 - 4 p.m. - Hands-on practice

We'll transfer images to our pieces, and practice carving. Sarah will give you one-on-one pointers and discuss applying secondary colors for more depth in your design.
